Understanding What Happens During Mine Surveys

By Patty Goff

Mining is a delicate activity that involves burrowing the earth to extract minerals. Before any extraction work commences, the mine has to be examined by experts. The professionals involved come from various educational backgrounds relevant to mining. The role of these experts is to design and plan the activities to be carried out in the mine. The experts can be hired as consultants or they may be employees of the mining entity. Mine surveys are a crucial part of the excavation process.

During the surveying process, the experts gather the most accurate details about the quarry. These details are utilized to gauge the viability of the quarry. Accidents occur in mines for different reasons. While planning may not prevent the occurrence of accidents, it can mitigate the effects. Assessment of the surveyors is used to determine if it is safe enough to start the mining process.

Experts involved in the survey are highly educated individuals. Education fields of engineering, architecture and mathematics are relevant to mining. Apart from educational training the experts should have on the job training. They spend a lot of time in mining sites in order to have a practical understanding of what happens. In modern times, mining zone surveyors are required to have university degrees. However, mine workers without university education but with lots of experience can work as quarry surveyors.

The principle errand of the surveyors is to create plans for the quarry. This includes drawing precise maps that give all the land parts of the quarry. They gather a lot of data about the mine and use it to make the maps. While doing the arranging, they must be mindful so as not to infringe on private property.

Topographical data is collected using surveying equipment. Most of the work of the investigators is carried out at the quarry site. They take and record carefully information about the topography of the area. The data is then used to create maps which will be relied upon during excavation. The maps will be used to guide operations over and underneath.

Mining is critical and the authorities are interested in it. The company conducting the survey will have to seek licenses in order to be allowed to proceed with the excavation. They will need to provide plenty of explanations to support their cause. The ability of the surveyor to communicate effectively is therefore important to ensure the process is not blocked for any reason.

Any exercises did on the site must be recorded. Surveying a mining area over is a consistent methodology. The review may need to be redesigned consistently relying upon the circumstances pervasive in the territory. Any changes on the site trigger another review keeping in mind the end goal to focus its impact on removal work.

Mine surveyors are therefore permanently engaged. They are entrusted to ensure that the work on the site is not disrupted. A lot is at stake in terms of investment and lives. The surveyors may be required to be on the excavation site for as long as the mining work continues.
