Way On How To Make Homemade Essential Oils

By Kristen Baird

Essential oils can be described to be highly volatile and concentrated and can be extracted from the aromatic plants. The oils have been in use for many decades and they are believed to have a variety of medicinal, culinary and therapeutic uses. About seven hundred different kinds of plants contain the useful essential oils. Below is a guide on how to make homemade essential oils.

First of all, the ideal apparatus should be collected mostly for distilling purposes. There are special distill that are designed to distill oil only. Apart from the already made, an individual can make theirs. With this, creativity can be incorporated in the process. There are different designs that can be utilized depending on the use of the distiller.

Once the distill is ready, harvesting of raw materials is done. Quality is very important in any production and in this case it is determined by the development of the plants. Therefore, it should be ensured that the plants are harvested on the correct period. If one is not informed on the best harvesting moments, they should undertake research to learn more on harvesting of these plants. Ensure that the method used to harvest is the right one.

The next stage will involve drying the plant materials. The amount of oil in each of these plants will be reduced through drying. However, the drying increases the yield per batch and this is because more material will fit in the batch. This process should be done carefully as direct sunlight is not recommended. It is optional though to dry the material. The best drying methods will vary with the type of plant.

Next, the tank should be added water. The water ought to be soft hence distilled water is the ideal. Enough water must be packed before starting off the process. It must be enough to run the whole process effectively. The quantity and plant used determines the time taken by this process. Dydrodistillation is preferred in cases where delicate flowers are used. There must be free floatation of the plant material in the water.

On adding the plant material in the distiller, it should be closed. The materials used must be touching the sides of this distiller slightly. As long as the layer is not going below steam outlet, it can be made thick. It should be waited to boil in water. On reaching 100 degrees, the plant releases essential oils. The distillate goes through the condenser to a separator.

Once done with the distillation, collect the oil. This is done through cheesecloth or anything similar to that. The cloth must be dry and clean. Detergents and dirt should be avoided as they can contaminate this oil. The oil should later be poured into the container for storage as quickly as possible. The oils may be kept for not less than two years although some possess unusual shelf lives.

The best stores of the oil is either stainless steel or dark bottles. This storage helps to improve on the time that the oil takes. The funnel to be used must be very clean. Finally the place used to store it must be cool and dark.
