A Discussion On Waste Water Purification System

By Kenneth Howard

Day in day out everything advances. We understand that among them is urbanization. That is alright. However, the other side of this our good friend is environmental pollution. This is mainly by the wastes emanating from the cities. You might have been scared by sight of wastes left in your environment not attended to. Sewage has lots of pollutants that can cause hazards to our health and if treated, can improve nature around us. We have to ensure that whatever is released into the environment is harmless. In summary, efficient waste water purification system should be developed to promote treatment of dirty water.

There are several steps in the process of treating those that is already contaminated. This is so that the contaminants are removed. Physical, biological and chemical approaches are utilized in all these steps.

The beginning stage is pretreatment. This is actually before the actually treatment process begins. The liquid is prepared for purification by getting rid of the pollutants that can be collected in this step through sieving. Barriers and mesh that traps these big objects along the path of the fluid are used. The objects are then destroyed through exposure to very high temperatures in the incinerator. Sand, marbles or even mirrors can be collected. The system can be put at risk of failing if these objects are not removed at this earlier stage. This is because they will cause blocking of pipes.

To add, primary treatment stage involves removal of sediments settling down at the sedimentation tanks. Floating objects are also removed through skimming. Clarifiers are also useful at this stage. The resulting material that has been collected can be used in soap making process.

Besides, is the secondary treatment stage. Majorly, those contaminants that are cleared in this stage are those from living organisms such as fecal matter. Most of them are already dissolved but only a few can be in suspended. Living organisms are reared in water and are made to eat up the matter thus promoting decomposition. It saves on space.

Fourthly, is tertiary treatment. This step can be considered as the last one in most of the systems. However, other systems have an additional step. The effluent is made better and quality is improved before being released into the surrounding locality. Filtration of very fine particles occurs to remove toxins thus the resulting liquid is clean. Besides, nitrogen and phosphorus are removed.

Towards the end of tertiary stage, it is taken into a large storing body usually which is man made like a dam. Microorganisms are used to remove contaminants from the water. After this process it can be of help in irrigation for agricultural purposes of even refilling the underground reserves.

Lastly, is the fourth treatment stage. It is under trials and has already been incorporated in the systems of some purification plants. It involves removal of chemicals that decompose very slowly thus stays for very long time in the polluted water. This part should include the control of odor into the environment.
