By Angel Dudley

Public relations also, referred to as PR, is a practice of directing the spreading of information between a person or an organization and the rest of the community. In most cases, it includes gaining exposure by an individual or organization by speaking to the public. In such forums, the discussions usually include a topic centered on public interest or non-profit news. Often, companies can use PR for business purposes. PR disciplines include; financial, consumer, crisis communication, internal communications, government, and food-centric PR. Public relations in Florida can be kept by a number of professionals operating in the area.

PR can be used in making negotiations with other business stakeholders about a particular opinion that interests the organizations. It is usually carried out by working with the media, conferences, proper communication with the employees, and winning organization awards. Generally, it is believed that creating a good rapport with the community helps in improving the image of an organization or individual.

Historically, PR is considered a traditional practice that had been founded as early as 1880 BC. Some scholars also argue that the first examples of PR must have originated in Rome when there was audience segmentation in gospels and promotions in politics. However, there are also oppositions from other scholars who argue that those views do not form part of PR history.

Many researchers however have argued that PR was only founded during the settlement of the New World. There were several exaggerated promotions used to lure settlers as well as marketing the first fund-raising pamphlet. Specifically, the pamphlets were used to collect funds for making the Harvard and spreading the anti-British sentiments.

In 1990, the PR agency, Publicity Bureau, transformed it into a profession. Its founders, Ivy Lee and Edward Bernay, were the first people to establish it as a profession in the United States. Other stakeholders include Basil Clarke, the profession founder in the UK, and Arthur Page who is known as the head of corporate PR.

The professionalism grew more after the Second World War as a result of war-time publicity talent going into public sector. At the same time, academic journals, industry publications, trade associations were also developed. Some of the leading PR agencies today began their global trademarks by early 1960s and 1970s.

The whole PR spectrum changed by1990 with an immense growth in relation to other fields. The internet technologies and media changed PR tactics and agent consolidates. There was also the introduction of new disciplines such as the community relations and investor relations. PR professionals are usually tasked with responsibility of giving a good portrait of an individual or organization.

Some of the professional duties involve articulating the main objectives and official opinions related to the media. They are also required to help in communicating, developing practical strategies, and presenting the opinions of their clients. As such they help the organization in the general management of activities. It is important to note that public relations contribute to the public perception of an individual or organization.
