Technical Details For Stage Lighting

By Christa Jarvis

Working the pieces together in a scene, stage, or set up for performances on concerts, would take a lot of work with different elements that needs to be well sewn together. Most of the concern would be for props, physical setup, lighting, and sometimes cameras. All of these should go together and blend in to give that perfect setup.

The lighting is very crucial since this would either make the audience feel the plain ambience of the stage or throw them off their seats. Stage lighting Chicago by directors is the key factor in playing with the eyesight and focus of the audiences. The type of styles used in this depends on what type of performance on the stage is happening.

Basically, what you need to know first are fixtures for the lighting. Designers can use many varieties of these and this will all depend on what it is used for. It should be crucial to know the power requirements for every fixture. 500 watts for 2.1 amps, 650 for 2.7, 1000 for 4.2., 1200 for 5.0, 2000 for 8.3. Knowing this can prevent from busted lights especially during those events and performances.

There are different kinds of fixtures for various purposes. First we have Wash Lights where it produces a soft beam which mimics natural sunlight dispersion. The size of the beam is easily adjustable so it can have many sources blended in together. These are mainly used for theatres because of their dispersed intensity.

Spotlights are, of course, to give focus on a subject, although they can somehow be quite difficult to control. These are usually used in rock concerts since it has the intensity needed to produce that aesthetic sharp and hard feel on stage. They work with many colors and all the light are inside the bulb which makes the fixture less expensive, although the bulb itself is actually expensive.

Flood lights can give a wide spread of exposure but they cannot be adjusted. They give off enough amount of flat exposure and is mostly used for backdrops or backgrounds on a set or stage although they do have different sizes depending on the need. They can be narrow to about twelve degrees, or wide as twenty four to forty eight degrees.

In theatre plays, the director for lighting should be able to go along with their rehearsals in order to get the perfect mood for each scene. There needs to be control on which the audience should focus by highlighting an area. They should also determine the mood, composition, and revelation of the form of the actors.

These have so many functionalities and possible ways for them to be played around depending on the setup. It is up to the director and coordinator to take care of this, especially with their colors, the types, and the angles as well. It would make the scene more believable and can lead to a successful portrayal.

The lights should be strategically placed in key places. This can be determined depending on the the scene for plays, the positions of instrumentalists and singers for concerts like in Chicago, IL. There are techniques like focusing two beam on an actor with them being forty five degrees pointing towards them to create a three dimensional effect.
