Choosing The Best Wood For Knife Handles

By Zelma Hurley

Since Stone Age people have been using knives and it has become one of the most important tools in the day to day lives of people. There are several materials that can be used to make the handle of the knife. They vary from wood to ivory and even bones. All they need to have is a firm grip. Most people even opt to customize their knife handle to make it even more personal. Making wood for knife handles can be a do it yourself project especially for the people that want to express their creativity.

It is the most used material to make the handles. It usually is also used on many other things such as the wheel of a ship, tools, and instruments among many others. One of the characteristics that make it that popular is the fact that it is organic. Many people are now switching and using organic materials and not inorganic materials like plastic. This is mostly so by the people who are very concerned about saving the world.

There are many varieties that one might use in the making of the handles. There are three main types; they are hardwood, softwoods and plain wood. The hardwood is more preferred since it usually is denser of all the three and the most resistant to penetration. This is where it got its name from, hardwood.

Apart from is class, there are many other reasons that would make one to purchase a knife with a wooden handle. People with taste like having things that will serve them for a longer while and they do not have to keep changing from time to time. This is why they go for the hardwood and it remains as the standard for knife handles.

Not every part of a tree trunk can make a good handle. The reason behind this is that each part has its own unique features. The heartwood is usually the one that is usually used to make knives. This is because the substance that it usually is made of does not decay as fast as that that makes up the sapwood. The heartwood just like the name suggests is usually the inner most part of the trunk. Fluids d not usually easily penetrate through the heartwood.

There are several qualities that make wood the best. One of them is that it usually lasts longest when compared to the other materials. This means that you will not need to purchase a new knife every now and then. It is also smooth on the hand since it does not chip.

The wooden handle should not stain easily as this makes the handle unattractive and look dirty. All organic material usually expands and contracts to some extent when they are subjected to heat. A stable material should always be used to make a handle so as to avoid movement that usually leads to the handle loosening.

Some people believe that the darker the wood is the better it is in terms of durability as well as quality. This is not wholly true since some are light in color and better than the dark ones.
